AB, ABC & ABCD Timber Flooring Grades Explained
AB, ABC, ABCD & ABCDE Timber Flooring Grades Explained
When choosing timber or engineered oak flooring, you may see grading terms such as AB Grade, ABC Grade, ABCD Grade, or ABCDE Grade. These grades can be confusing at first, but they are very important when selecting the right look for your home.
Timber grading is not mainly about strength or product quality. In most cases, the grade describes the visual appearance of the floorboards — including the amount of knots, gum veins, sapwood, colour variation, pinholes, checks, and natural character visible in the timber.
At Elite Wooden Floors, we always explain timber grading as a design choice. Some customers prefer a clean and uniform floor. Others love a more natural, rustic, and character-rich look. The best grade depends on the style and mood you want to create in your space.
What Is Timber Grading?
Timber is a natural material, so every board is different. No two oak boards are exactly the same. During manufacturing, timber boards are sorted based on their visible natural features.
Boards with fewer and smaller features are usually placed into cleaner grades. Boards with more knots, stronger grain, sapwood, and natural markings are placed into more character-filled grades.
Common natural features include:
-
Knots
-
Gum veins
-
Sapwood
-
Pinholes
-
Filled cracks or checks
-
Natural grain variation
-
Colour variation
-
Mineral streaks
-
Worm holes in some rustic grades
These features are not defects when they are part of the selected grade. They are part of the natural beauty of real timber flooring.
AB Grade — Prime Grade
AB Grade is often known as Prime Grade.
This is one of the cleanest and most refined timber flooring grades. It usually has very small knots, minimal gum veins, and a more consistent colour tone across the boards.
Appearance
AB Grade has a smooth, calm, and uniform look. Natural features are limited, and the overall floor appearance is cleaner and more modern.
Best suited for
AB Grade is ideal for:
-
Luxury homes
-
Modern interiors
-
Minimalist designs
-
Clean Scandinavian-style spaces
-
Customers who prefer fewer knots and less variation
If you want engineered oak flooring with a refined and elegant look, AB Grade is usually the best option.
ABC Grade — Select Grade
ABC Grade is commonly compared with Select Grade.
This grade offers a balance between a clean appearance and natural timber character. You may see small-to-medium knots, light gum veins, and moderate colour variation.
Appearance
ABC Grade still looks elegant and controlled, but it has more warmth and personality than AB Grade. It does not look too plain, but it is also not overly rustic.
Best suited for
ABC Grade is a good choice for:
-
Family homes
-
Modern Australian interiors
-
Customers wanting natural character without too many knots
-
Open-plan living areas
-
Balanced, warm, and timeless designs
ABC Grade is often the “safe middle ground” because it works well with many interior styles.
ABCD Grade — Natural Grade
ABCD Grade is often known as Natural Grade.
This grade includes more natural features than AB or ABC. You can expect more knots, stronger grain, visible gum veins, filled checks, and greater colour variation.
Appearance
ABCD Grade gives the floor a more natural and authentic timber look. Every board has its own personality, and the finished floor feels warmer and more organic.
Best suited for
ABCD Grade works well for:
-
Coastal homes
-
Rustic interiors
-
Country-style homes
-
Character homes
-
Customers who like natural timber features
-
Spaces where warmth and texture are important
ABCD Grade is a great option if you want your floor to clearly show the beauty of real oak.
ABCDE Grade — Rustic Grade
ABCDE Grade is usually a more rustic and feature-heavy grade.
This grade may include larger knots, more frequent natural markings, stronger colour variation, sapwood, pinholes, and filled natural cracks. It creates a bold and highly character-filled timber floor.
Appearance
ABCDE Grade has the most natural and rustic look. It celebrates timber in its raw, organic form, with more visible variation from board to board.
Best suited for
ABCDE Grade is suitable for:
-
Rustic oak flooring styles
-
Farmhouse interiors
-
Feature flooring designs
-
Heritage-style homes
-
Customers who want strong timber character
-
Projects where natural variation is part of the design
This grade is not for customers wanting a very clean or uniform look. It is best for people who love natural timber features.
Is a Higher Grade Better Quality?
Not always.
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in timber flooring. A cleaner grade does not automatically mean the flooring is stronger or better quality. In most cases, the difference is visual.
For example, AB Grade and ABCD Grade can both be made from the same timber species and manufactured to the same structural standard. The main difference is how clean or character-filled the boards look.
So instead of asking, “Which grade is better?”, the better question is:
Which grade suits the look I want for my home?
Colour Variation and Natural Timber Features
Because timber is a natural product, colour variation is normal. Even within the same grade, you may see differences in tone, grain, and pattern between boards.
Some grades have more consistent colour, while others show stronger variation. Lighting, wall colour, furniture, and room size can also affect how the floor looks after installation.
This is why it is always best to view samples before making a final decision. A small sample gives a guide, but the full installed floor will always show more natural variation.
Filled Knots and Natural Checks
In natural and rustic grades, some knots, cracks, or pinholes may be filled during production. The filler colour is usually selected to complement the timber, but it may vary between batches.
This is normal for character-grade engineered oak flooring. It helps create a smoother usable surface while keeping the natural look of the timber.
Which Timber Grade Should You Choose?
Your choice should depend on your interior style and personal preference.
Choose AB Grade if you want:
A clean, minimal, premium look with very few knots and low colour variation.
Choose ABC Grade if you want:
A balanced floor with some natural timber character but still an elegant and controlled appearance.
Choose ABCD Grade if you want:
A warmer, more natural oak floor with visible knots, grain, and character.
Choose ABCDE Grade if you want:
A rustic, bold, feature-heavy timber floor with strong natural variation.
